Matthew Bible Study Lesson 3B
The King Worshiped and the Exposure of Every
Heart
Matthew 2:7-12
Teacher: Kerry Battle

The Burden of Matthew 2:7-12

Matthew 2:1-6 exposed a painful reality.
The King was revealed.
The prophecy was known.
The location was known.
Yet many remained unmoved.
Matthew 2:7-12 now asks another question:

What does true response to the King look like?
The chapter has already exposed:
Herod’s fear.
Jerusalem’s trouble.
The scribes’ dead knowledge.
Now Matthew exposes:

False worship.
True worship.
Obedient seeking.
The worthiness of the King.
The sovereignty of Yahuah.
Matthew 2:7-8

False Worship and Hidden Rebellion
Then Herod privately called the wise men.
He said:
Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have
found Him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship
Him also.

These are some of the most deceptive words in the chapter.
Herod speaks the language of worship.
But worship is not in his heart.
His mouth says:
I want to worship.
His heart says:

I want Him removed.
Isaiah 29:13
Psalm 55:21
Proverbs 26:24-26
False worship often uses the language of submission while
resisting the authority of the King.

The issue is not whether a person talks about worship.
The issue is whether a person bows.
The Difference Between Interest and Submission
Herod is interested.
The Magi are submitted.
Interest gathers information.

Submission changes direction.
Interest wants knowledge.
Submission wants the King.
Matthew 2:9-10

Movement Versus Information

The wise men depart.
The scribes possessed information.
The Magi responded to information.
The scribes remained seated.
The Magi moved.
The issue is not who knows more.

The issue is who responds.
Isaiah 55:6
Jeremiah 29:13
Deuteronomy 4:29
Truth that does not produce movement has failed to accomplish its
purpose.

Great Joy
When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
The source of their joy was not the sign.
The source of their joy was where the sign was leading.
The sign pointed to the King.
Psalm 16:11

Psalm 97:1
The closer they come to the King, the greater their joy becomes.
Matthew 2:11
Worship Before Gifts
They entered.
They saw the child.

They fell down.
They worshiped.
Then they opened their treasures.
The order matters.
Worship comes before gifts.
Submission comes before offering.

The heart bows before the hand opens.
1 Samuel 15:22
Proverbs 21:3
Isaiah 1:11-17
The gifts are not the center.
The King is.

True Worship
Herod talks about worship.
The Magi practice worship.
One speaks.
One bows.
Matthew 2:11

The Worthiness of the King
They present:
Gold.
Frankincense.
Myrrh.
The gifts are costly.

The gifts are valuable.
The gifts honor the child.
Psalm 72:10-11
Isaiah 60:6
The King is worthy of honor.
The King is worthy of worship.

The King is worthy of sacrifice.
The King is worthy of obedience.
Matthew 2:12
Yahuah’s Purpose Cannot Be Stopped
The Magi obey and return another way.
Herod’s plan fails.

Not because Herod lacks power.
But because Yahuah possesses greater authority.
Proverbs 19:21
Psalm 33:10-11
Job 42:2
Isaiah 46:9-10

Not Herod.
Not Jerusalem.
Not Rome.
Yahuah rules history.
The Covenant Verdict of Matthew 2:1-12
Herod:

Open rebellion.
Jerusalem:
Passive religion.
The Scribes:
Dead knowledge.
The Magi:

Obedient response.
The issue is not access to truth.
The issue is response to truth.

Final Heart Check

The King has been revealed.
The evidence has been presented.

Now every heart is exposed.
Herod heard and resisted.
Jerusalem heard and was troubled.

The scribes heard and remained seated.
The Magi heard and moved.
The difference was never information.
The difference was response.
The question is not:
Do we know the truth?

The question is:
When the truth reveals the King, do we bow?
Because every life ultimately renders a verdict concerning Him.
